Best Buy’s CinemaNow is now available for Xbox users on Xbox Live. The service lets users rent or purchase premium titles such as Underworld: Awakening and Thor through the CinemaNow app, though it’s hard to find many available titles in HD. HD (High-Definition) titles stream at 8000Kbps and 24 or 30 (29.97) frames-per-second. SD (Standard-Definition) titles are available at an average bitrate of 2000Kbps at 24 or 30 (29.97) frames-per-second. Read More

CinemaNow upgrades to streaming 1080p

Best Buy’s CinemaNow online movie service is adding several hundred movies in 1080p HD to their streaming library. The hi-def additions include movies from 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. which will contribute to CinemaNow’s 15,000+ title library. There is one caveat though. If you want the 1080p HD quality you’ll need a Windows 7 PC with a 2nd generation Intel Core processor and Intel Insider technology. (The hardware-based Intel Insider rig enhances security on 2nd gen. Intel Core processors.) That leaves out a number of willing viewers (anyone with a 1st gen. Intel Core) and Mac users who might want to test out the quality. Big box retailer Best Buy doesn’t plan on watching Apple and Amazon dominate the online movie sales business, or sit back waiting for Walmart’s Vudu service to take off. The company will begin selling movies via internet this month through CinemaNow, an online distribution service acquired by Sonic Solutions in 2008.
