Cablevision MSG: First 3D broadcast in US will be hockey game

The first high-definition 3D television broadcast in the US will not come from Comcast or DirecTV but from Cablevision, who will premiere the format Mar. 24 with coverage of the Islanders vs. Rangers NHL game at Madison Square Garden. 3ality Digital will provide the 3D capturing equipment for the event, which will show on Cablevision’s channel 1300.

Unfortunately, only customers with 3D televisions, HD service from Cablevision, and specific 3D glasses will be able to watch the broadcast. But others may be able to view the 3D broadcast at a special viewing party hosted by The Theater Madison Square Garden.

The 3D coverage of the NHL game will look a lot different from the way NHL games are normally shot. The five 3D cameras planned for the event will be placed closer to the action, and, shots will hold longer than the fast cutting we normally find in sports coverage.

Broadcast 3D will be in full bloom this year: ESPN announced early in January plans to broadcast the 2010 World Cup South Africa in 3D in June this summer; DirecTV also announced in January plans to launch a 3D channel (or channels), while they displayed a 3D feed to a Panasonic 3D HDTV at CES 2010.

Other planned 3D sports events following soon after the NHL game on Cablevision include Comcast’s plans to cover the back nine of The Masters in 3D. Also worth mentioning are CBS’s plans to host the Final Four college basketball games and NCAA Championship in 3D but only in theaters.
