Comcast and Skype announced a partnership to bring HD video chat through your television. If all goes according to plan, you’ll be able to make video and audio calls, send text messages, and talk while watching TV. The Skype software incorporated with Comcast’s service will also let you access contact lists and enable Caller ID on your screen.
To use the service, you’ll need an adapter box, HD or high-quality video camera, and a “specially designed remote control” which lets you text on Skype and control your TV functions. According to Comcast, the party on the other end of the line doesn’t need anything beyond what they use for Skype.
Comcast says the video resolution will initially be streamed at 720p but that 1080p may be offered in the future. Beta testing will be happening in upcoming months with more details on the product later this year.
