Cablevision licenses RealD for first 3D sports broadcast

Gearing up for the first live 3D sports broadcast in the US, Cablevision has announced licensing of the stereoscopic RealD Format. The RealD tools will be used to provide tonight’s Rangers vs. Islanders hockey game at Madison Square Garden, a landmark event which will be available to Cablevision subscribers in the Tri-state area with a 3D HDTV and HD service.

Jim Blackley, Cablevision’s senior VP of engineering and technology said, “We’ve been extensively testing the RealD Format and believe it is the highest quality and most broadly compatible method for delivering 3D video to our customers.”

For those without 3D HDTVs, a special viewing party will be held at the Theater at Madison Square Garden which uses the RealD Format and RealD’s XL Cinema System for projection on the big screen.

The RealD format uses circular polarization rather than linear polarization (which is used by IMAX). An advantage of circular polarization is that viewers are able to tilt their heads without losing the 3D effect.
