This year’s Oscar nominees were announced for consideration at the 96th Academy Awards celebrating films from 2023. The event will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be aired live on ABC in more than 200 territories worldwide.
While many of the Oscar nominees were expected, there were many surprises including snubs of some of last year’s biggest films and best performances by actors and actresses. We’ve first got to mention the omission of Leonardo DiCaprio who has not been nominated for Best Actor in Killers of the Flower Moon, even with his stellar performance as Ernest Burkhart under the guidance of Director Martin Scorsese.
Greta Gerwig was not nominated for Best Director for Barbie as some critics predicted, even though the film grossed almost $1.5B at the worldwide box office. And, some may have thought Margot Robbie’s performance was Oscar-worthy, but did not make the cut according to the Academy. The movie has been nominated for Best Motion Picture of the Year though. And, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera were both nominated for supporting roles in the film.
In the animated category, it’s a bit of a surprise that Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume was not nominated for an Oscar alongside The Boy and the Heron, Elemental, Nimona, Robot Dreams, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The film was eligible to be considered for the 2024 Academy Awards even though it was actually released in 2022 in Japan, and the following year in the US.
There were not many surprises in the Best Picture of the Year category, however. Among the Oscar nominees for Best Picture of the Year are American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.
