‘Pitch Black’ restored in 4k for UHD BD & Blu-ray Special Editions [Updated]

Pitch-Black-Arrow-Video-Blu-ray-special-edition-600pxPitch Black (2000) has been restored to 4k for release on Ultra HD Blu-ray (2160p) and   Blu-ray (1080p) special editions from Arrow Video. The editions include both the theatrical and director cuts of the film, along with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound.

The 4k Blu-ray version features High Dynamic Range via Dolby Vision (compatible with HDR10) for increased color depth. Pitch Black is a notably dark film, so we’re excited to see how HDR can expand the amount of visible details possible with 4k resolution and deeper color depth.

The packaging for the Blu-ray and 4k Blu-ray special editions is notably different (see the Blu-ray design below), but the Ultra HD Blu-ray version is easily recognizable by the header and HDR label on the face.

Pitch Black is list-priced $39.95 (now $27.99 on Blu-ray) and $49.95 (now $19.99 on 4k Blu-ray). Both editions release on Aug. 18, 2020. (Buy on Amazon)

[Update 1: US release date for the 4k Blu-ray edition pushed to Sept. 1, 2020. UK/Canada release dates stay August 17/18.]

[Update 2: Due to a printing error the UHD BD release will no longer include a slipcase in any territory.]

  1. Agreed. It is such a cool movie but with that poor color grading looks like an indie or student film! Or, like the old James Bond films that were filmed during day filtered to look like night. For the yeara 2000 you would have expected better. Maybe the 4k restoration will be better than expected. Arrow?

  2. Pitch Black Seriously needs to have the coloring re-edited. They simply applied a 1 second blue filter effect from windows movie maker in the first half of the movie and it looks like a movie from the late 80’s.
They need to re colour that section of the film its horrendous.
It’s a very grainy movie and grain makes movies look OLD so up scaling to 4k won’t make it look any better and i’m not sure HDR can save what the movie is.
ALSO WTF can use simply add dolby atmos seriously it is an extra couple of speakers even if a piss poor effort of attempted it woundn’t cost much . . . . . .
