‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Digital 4k Limited to These Services

star-wars-the-last-jedi-poster-movies-anywhere-1024pxStar Wars: The Last Jedi will release early for digital purchase on Tuesday, March 13, but even though there are 4k disc editions planned later this month only these digital services in the US are selling ‘The Last Jedi’ in Digital 4k.

Those services include FandangoNow, Microsoft and Vudu where Star Wars: The Last Jedi is selling in Digital UHD (4k) from $24.99 to $29.99. The exclusive 4k availability will likely not change upon release date, as digital distribution agreements are already in place. And, neither will the prices at any time soon. With Apple iTunes out of the picture (where most Digital 4k titles are $19.99) there is no reason why the aforementioned services should drop their prices.

As far as specifications, Vudu offers Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 4k UHD resolution with Dolby Vision for HDR and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. FandangoNow and Microsoft don’t provide those specifications on their web pages (making it difficult to determine pre-release), but they do offer a large portion of their 4k libraries in HDR.

To watch Digital UHD through Fandango you’ll need a Roku 4 or an LG or Samsung 4K Ultra HD capable TV. Microsoft requires an Xbox One S or Xbox One X connected to a 4K television over HDMI 2.0a with support for HDCP 2.2. Vudu also has a list of supporting devices for both 4k and HDR, and has recently been updated to include Sony 2018 4k TVs.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be the first ‘Star Wars’ film to be available in 4k Ultra HD (both in Digital and on Blu-ray). So does this mean other Star Wars titles will be updated to 4k?

  1. I’m not happy, I have redeemed every digital movie I’ve bought with iTunes because of my household being iTunes/ios people. I didn’t look too closely at the digital format/venu…why would I? I’ve never seen a movie NOT have an iTunes component to it. Color me sad.
