Almost a dozen movies released to Ultra HD Blu-ray today, and each title features High Dynamic Range (HDR) color specifications to improve color depth, detail and contrast. Of course you’ll need an HDR-compatible 4k TV to take advantage of the color enhancements, but regardless, the 4k resolution delivers four times the megapixels as regular HD.
HDR is becoming a standard on 4k Blu-rays, usually indicated on the front or back of the slipcover by the HDR or Ultra HD Premium sticker. You’ll also find specific video and audio specs in small print on the back of the slipcover and Blu-ray case.
As far as audio, Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs typically come with English soundtracks in Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 alternate, or, DTS:X with a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 backup.
Today’s Ultra HD Blu-ray releases include the Warner Bros.’ title Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Harry Potter-franchise films Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 & 2, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Sony Pictures’ The Smurfs, 20th Century Fox’s Why Him?, Lionsgate’s Patriots Day, BBC’s Planet Earth II, and Universal Picture’s Furious 7 and Fast & Furious 6 are also now available in 4k Blu-ray.
