The $200 Blu-ray player is the Sony BDP-S470 and it will handle 3D content after a firmware upgrade headed your way this summer. No it’s not quite a 3D player yet, but the firmware upgrade will make it one, along with the higher-end BDP-S570 ($250) player and the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 home theater systems.
The BDP-S470 and BDP-S570 are of course 1080p resolution with Dolby TrueHD and dtx-HD Master Audio. Both feature BRAVIA internet video, BD-LIVE, and DVD upscaling with Precision Cinema HD.
The main difference between the two models is the BDP-S570 has built-in wireless and the BDP-470 is only wireless ready. (Meaning, you’d have to buy a USB adapter.) The BDP-S570 also features IP Content Noise Reduction, designed to optimize picture quality when streaming full screen internet video.
The new models are expected to hit stores next month. Stay away from the new Sony BDP-S370 model pictured above ($180), as Sony’s announcement did not mention it as 3D upgradeable.
