Since it started shipping on Sept. 1, the new lighter, slimmer, 120GB Playstation 3 has sold one million units worldwide. The PS3 came tagged under $300, a price point with which Xbox 360 previously held an edge.
The sales represent a 300% increase compared to weeks before Sept. 1. Hardware sales related to the PS3 also jumped 140% in the first week of shipping the new PS3.
Sony started an ad campaign focusing on the lower price, hoping to attract PS2 owners and consumers interested in making the jump to high-definition gaming and Blu-ray Disc.
The design of the new PS3 not only made the unit slimmer (amounting to about 2/3 of the previous model), its power consumption and fan noise were also reduced.
The 120GB PS3 sells for $299 in the US, 299 euro, and 29,980 yen in Japan.
