Comcast stepping up their HD channel count

The cable television provider will add 80 networks including 51 high-definition channels in North and South Bay, California.

Comcast will add 80 new networks to its channel lineup on Aug. 11. The additions in the San Francisco Bay area include up to 51 high-definition (HD) networks, 13 Spanish language channels, 14 international premium networks and two standard definition channels.

This will put Comcast close to the 100 HD channel mark in twenty-six communities (see below) in the South and North Bay who will soon have 92 HD channels to choose from. The launches are largely a result of Comcast’s upgrading of customer’s systems from analog to digital.

Comcast customers who subscribe to HD service get access to: live HD sporting events from Comcast SportsNet, ESPN and ESPN2, TBS, TNT, Versus; more than 200 HD movies from top movie providers; nearly 300 television shows On Demand HD like “Mad Men,” “Weeds” and the “CSI” series; and hundreds of music offerings in the music category.

New channels will be available on Aug. 11 to residential homes and businesses in the following cities: Belvedere, Corte Madera, Cupertino, Fairfax, Forest Knolls, Greenbrae, Kentfield, Lagunitas, Larkspur, Los Altos, Marin, Mill Valley, Milpitas, Mountain View, Novato, Ross, San Anselmo, San Geronimo, San Quentin, San Rafael, Santa Clara, Saratoga, Sausalito, Sunnyvale, Tiburon and Woodacre. (Note: Los Altos, Milpitas, Saratoga and Sunnyvale have already launched 12 of the HD networks and Retirement Living TV, so those cities will be receiving 67 new networks).

  1. Is there a website I can use to find out what my local channel line-up is (Marin County, CA) with a digital tuner and no cable box? The channel alocations are very confusing and seem to change weekly.

    Thanks,

    Ted

  2. Comcast executives claimed in 2007 that they would have 800 HD Channels. Problem with Comcast is they have very little bandwith to expand HD, according to employees I have spoken with at Comcast. There DVR is the worst DVR in the industry and if the product was sold as a stand alone device the FCC would issue a mandatory recall. I recently switched to AT& T U-Verse I live in the East Bay, CA. I love the service. There is of course no perfect service but if you have invested in HD TV’s you should be getting as much HD Broadcast Content as possible. In spite of Comcast’s Advertising spots they do not not have the most HD content. The only way they cam make their claim is due to their HD On Demand content. When it comes to sports no one has more than DirecTV. But U-Verse is close.
