Tuesday, Sept. 10 will be the biggest 4k Blu-ray release date yet with 16 new titles to choose from (and at least 24 when you count retailer exclusives).
The large number of Ultra HD BD titles is mainly fueled by Disney’s upgrades of ten past films to 4k such as Aladdin (1992), Brave, the Cars series, Finding Dory and Finding Nemo, Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, and Ratatouille, but also this year’s Aladdin releasing to disc for the first time.
In addition, Lionsgate’s summer smash John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum hits stores on Ultra HD Blu-ray along with 4k upgrades to past films such as Casino (1995), Daybreakers (2009), and Lock Up (1989).
Two collected editions also release on Sept. 10 including Jurassic World: 5-Movie Collection and the Edgar Wright Trilogy with Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007), and The World’s End (2014) which features Dolby Vision and HDR10+ on all three 4k discs.
Sales of 4k Blu-rays are still only a small percentage of overall disc sales. According to MediaPlayNews* the 4k disc format claimed 11.6% of the market while 1080p Blu-ray commanded 38% for the week ending Aug. 24, 2019. DVD still led packaged media with 50.5% of sales, but when combining both Blu-ray formats there is only a 1% difference.
