It’s one film that didn’t get much hype upon its theatrical premiere this summer but has already been scheduled for release on Blu-ray and DVD. Siberia, starring Keanu Reeves, looks pretty much like a John Wick installment except our hero this time is on the hunt for diamonds.
Reeves doesn’t go too far outside his comfort zone in this film. As it were, he almost seems to play the same guy in every action movie he signs up for. But I recently watched the original Matrix film the other night and was pleasantly surprised to find his acting fit the role perfectly. Who else could have been “The One?” The Matrix is a really good flick by the way: great concept, fantastic filming, and groundbreaking editing that keeps the movie still fresh today.
Siberia isn’t as good as the John Wick films, or Constantine for that matter in which Reeves plays a detective who investigates the supernatural, but it is worth picking up on Blu-ray or at least renting if you’re a Keanu Reeves fan.
In the film, Reeves plays the role of Lucas Hill, a diamond trader in search of his partner who goes missing in Russia. He finds himself tangled in black market trading, in love, and in danger from a Russian mob.
There are bad guys, romance, and guns “lots of them” (do you get The Matrix quote?) that keep Siberia moving at a decent pace. And although the film is categorized as a crime thriller, it really does feel like a John Wick film in which Reeves gets to look cool with a shotgun.
On Rotten Tomatoes Siberia gets a 6/10 on the Tomatometer from 32 reviews. On IMDB it gets a 4.4 out of 10 from approximately 3,500 votes.
Siberia was distributed by Saban Films in theaters and by Lionsgate for home media releases including Blu-ray and DVD. The film hits stores on disc and On Demand on Sept. 18, 2018.
