Starting Thursday, Aug. 9 DirecTV will offer the PGA Championship for the first time in 4k Ultra HD. The 4k (2160p) video can be found on DirecTV Channel 106 and includes High Dynamic Range color expansion on HDR-enabled TVs.
You won’t see all eighteen holes in 4k though. As with other tournaments the higher resolution coverage is limited, and for the PGA tournament will be shot at Holes 16, 17, and 18. CBS will be using fifteen 4K HDR cameras to provide the live 4k footage for DirecTV.
4k programming of the PGA Championship follows DirecTV’s broadcast of the Masters in April, the U.S. Open in June, and The Open Championship from Scotland last month.
The 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in Missouri starts at 6:50 a.m. (in groups of three), but DirecTV’s 4k channel won’t start airing until 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The coverage continues until 8 p.m. ET with six hours also scheduled every day though Sunday, Aug. 12.
