New Line Home Video has revealed two versions of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition; one a 3-Disc Blu-ray set and the other a 5-Disc Blu-ray set with 3D versions of the film. Both editions will also come with Digital HD copies and over nine hours of bonus material including audio commentaries with Peter Jackson and co-producer Philippa Boyens, travel footage through New Zealand, and the next two installments of The Appendices – Peter Jackson’s production documentary series.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition will include soundtracks formatted in 7.1 Channel DTS-HD Master Audio (48kHz, 24-bit), as well as French and Spanish language soundtracks in Dolby Digital 5.1. The video is formatted in MPEG-4 AVC with maximum of resolution is 1080p.
Total runtime of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition is 186 minutes, which adds another 25 minutes to the 161-minute theatrical release.
List price for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition 3-Disc set is $35.99, while The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition 5-Disc set (with Blu-ray 3D) is list-priced at $54.99.
