NASA unveils HD footage

Today NASA will unveil more than 100 hours of historical film restored to high-definition. The footage, from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions will be presented to NASA Administrator Mike Griffin at the U.S. Capitol, and made available to researchers and the general public.

The Discovery Channel restored the NASA footage for a television series set to premiere June 8th called “When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions.” The series will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the space agency, and will air as a six-hour special on three consecutive Sundays.

Charlie Duke, of Apollo 16 said, “There’s not one area of our life that has not been touched by space age technology.” “Today those pictures are classic,” said Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan, “They’re still overpowering today.”
