It’s a big week for new Blu-ray releases with about 75 new titles including several new 4k Blu-ray movies to consider. We’ve got a full list below. But first, here are our highlights for the week.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado is the sequel to the highly-acclaimed Sicario directed by Denis Villeneuve, only this time Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah, Suburra) directs returning actors Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin (minus Emily Blunt) in a script written by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Hell or High Water). While the sequel isn’t as riveting as the original, Sicario: Day of the Soldado looks great on Blu-ray and 4k Blu-ray (even though the film was only mastered in 2k) and soundtrack provided in native Dolby Atmos. Both Blu-ray combos include a second disc and digital copy.
The First Purge is the fourth in the series from Universal Pictures and became the highest grossing title in the franchise. Written and produced by James DeMonaco (who directed the previous 3 films), The First Purge centers on the disturbed drug addict named Skeletor and provides the origins of the 12-hour “purge” crime sprees in the US. The movie is available on both Blu-ray and 4k Blu-ray, each with a second disc and digital copy.
And, from Artsploitation Films, Molly is an entertaining post-apocalyptic adventure that’s something like Mad Max meets Kill Bill with a touch of supernatural. The indie Dutch film, available on Blu-ray for the first time, stars Julia Batelaan as the young and indestructible hero named “Molly” who yields special powers that are highly desired in an underground cage-fighting organization. It’s available in a single-disc Blu-ray edition (no digital copy included).
Other new Blu-ray we want to mention this week include Community – The Complete Series in a 12-disc set with all 6 seasons, Sailor Moon S remastered for release in high definition for the first time, the UK dramatic feature film Leave No Trace from Oscar-nominated Debra Granik (Winter’s Bone), and, complete seasons of the television shows Community and Rescue Me.
