March 14th is turning out to be one of the better home media release dates, with a mix of new titles on Blu-ray and Digital-only. Let’s break down our top picks for the week.
On Blu-ray, 2x Oscar-nominated film Passengers will release to 4k Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and 3D Blu-ray. What’s starting to become a trend the 3D version is only available on the Ultra HD Blu-ray combo ($25.99), in effect reducing standard disc variations to just three: Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray (with 3D Blu-ray) and DVD.
Denzel Washington’s Oscar-winning film Fences hits stores on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. The 2-disc combo ($19.99) from Paramount Home Media includes a Blu-ray disc and Digital HD code that can be redeemed with either iTunes or UltraViolet.
The feature film Ghost In The Shell (1995) is releasing to a Blu-ray “O-Ring” Steelbook/Mondo X edition from Anchor Bay. The anime classic from Japanese director Mamoru Oshii has enjoyed several disc releases including in 2014 (25th Anniversary edition) and in 2016 (in metal packaging), but this one seems mainly to piggyback on the theatrical release of the live-action Ghost in the Shell film starring Scarlett Johansson.
Collateral Beauty starring Will Smith and Edward Norton will only be available on Blu-ray and DVD after the Ultra HD Blu-ray edition was cancelled. The 1-disc BD from Warner Bros does include a Digital HD copy to download, and the special feature “A Modern Fable: Discovering Collateral Beauty.” for $19.99 (BD) or $15.99 (DVD).
Other Blu-ray releases include Solace ($14.99) starring Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell, 1969 sci-fi/western The Valley of the Gwangi ($17.11), Season 1 of History channel’s Six ($19.99) and Oscar-nominated drama/comedy Elle ($19.99) starring Isabelle Huppert.
On Digital HD there are several titles releasing on March 14th including Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated historical drama Silence ($14.99), Patriot’s Day ($14.99) starring Mark Wahlberg, A Monster Calls ($14.99), Monster High: Electrified ($14.99), and The Best of Rooster Teeth Animated Adventures 2 ($19.99).
