It’s Tuesday again and time to pick up a new Blu-ray or two for the weekend. This week there are plenty of options between comedies, action, and animated films, as well as a few TV series you might check out. Here are three highlights for the week followed by a longer list of new releases for October 11, 2016.
Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters (2016) is now available on Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and DVD. The redo of the hit 80’s film is directed by Paul Feig with an all-woman “ghostbusting” team that includes Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon. Sony has done something different this time by including the 3D format with the Ultra HD edition, minimizing the hi-def disc options down to just two. Shout! Factory has released a special Collector’s Edition of John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). The edition features a new 2k scan and 4.1 audio from the original 70MM six track Dolby stereo soundtrack, along with loads of extras such as audio commentary, vintage featurettes, and outtakes. Price: $21 (Blu-ray)
Ice Age: Collision Course has been released to Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray in 2-disc combo editions that also include a Digital HD copy. Bonus material on the Blu-ray with DVD includes seven featurettes and a gallery of 12 images, but the UHD BD release also features an additional piece of content called “Scrat: Spaced Out Mini-Movie.” Prices: $19.99 (BD), $24.99 (3D BD), $24.99 (UHD BD)
