Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has announced plans for releasing titles to both Ultra HD Blu-ray and Ultra HD Digital formats starting this summer.
Among the previously-released movies slated for both UHD formats are Everest, Lucy, and Lone Survivor, as well as upcoming theatrical releases Jason Bourne, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and Warcraft.
According to Universal Pictures, all of the 4k Ultra HD releases will feature HDR-encoded video for TVs that support the format, and, select new and catalog titles will be mastered in Dolby Vision.
Universal also plans to release a selection of IMAX cinematic films to Ultra HD, however, no specific titles were mentioned in the studio’s press announcement.
Other studios have already released a limited selection of movies to Ultra HD Blu-ray including Warner Bros., Lionsgate, 20th Century Fox, and Sony, although only one UHD BD player (the Samsung K8500) is currently available on the market.
On the digital side, Vudu, Netflix, and Amazon Video have limited selections of titles in the Ultra HD format.
