Sony slims down its newest 4k handy cam

Sony-FDR-AX33-B-4k-handy-camAt CES, Sony is showing off their new FDR-AX33 4k handy cam that’s 30-percent smaller and 20-percent lighter than the FDR-AX100 introduced at last year’s show. The camera weighs just 1 pound and 7 ounces (with the included battery) and measures approximately 3 inches by 6 inches.

The FDR-AX33 captures images with a 1″ Exmor R CMOS sensor, shoots up to 4k/30p video, and records using XAVC S, AVCHD or MP4 codecs. The camera’s lens is a wide-angle Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T 26.8mm G model.

Features of the small camera include Balanced Optical SteadyShot (B.O.SS) and Optical SteadyShot for blur-free stable recording, and high-bitrate 100Mbps recording in Sony’s XAVC S codec.

A handy playback function called “Super-sampled Full HD Playback” automatically down-converts 4K footage to 2K (Full HD) for viewing seamlessly.

The FDR-AX33 is currently priced at $999 on Sony’s website, although not yet available to order.

If you’re at CES, head on over to Sony in the Central Hall.
