Remember when Amazon just sold books? Yeah, me neither. The online powerhouse appears ready to continue its product expansion with a television set-top box. Bloomberg has the scoop, citing three sources who are in the know but can’t say anything official just yet. The box would plug into a TV and deliver streaming video over the Internet, of course focusing greatly on Amazon’s expanding video services. That would put Amazon in competition with products like the Roku, Apple TV, and gaming consoles that are increasingly doing double duty as media streamers. An Amazon spokesperson had no comment on the story.
Bloomberg’s sources say the device is being “developed by Amazon’s Lab126 division in Cupertino, Calif., which has toyed with building TV-connected devices for several years.” Amazon’s push into the home video space has been well-documented, including the recent launch of 14 pilots to their video service.
