At a press conference today Amazon revealed a new Kindle model, the Kindle Fire HD. The tablet is now available for pre-order and will ship in 7″ and 8.9″ display models. There’s also a 4G model of the 8.9″ making it a true competitor to Apple’s 4G iPad. The 4G model is available in 32GB and 64GB configurations, while the WiFi-only model comes with 16GB or 32GB harddrives. The 7″ model is available in either 16GB or 32GB. Other features of the Kindle Fire HD include Dolby audio, dual stereo speakers, and ultra-fast 4G LTE wireless. Amazon also boasted a $49.99 one-year 4G data package. Prices on the Kindle Fire HD start at $199 (Kindle Fire HD), $299 (Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ WiFi-only), and $499 (Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ 4G). Amazon also introduced Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Paperwhite 3G — an improved line of Kindles that add 62% more pixels and increase contrast by 25%. The Paperwhite models feature a patented built-in light that makes the display viewable in all lighting conditions without glare. See pricing in the graphic below or visit Amazon for more details. The new Kindle Fire HD will start shipping Sept. 14, while the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite will start shipping Oct. 1, 2012. The 8.9″ models are expected to start shipping Nov. 20, 2012.
