Lucas Film & 20th Century Fox have released the cover packaging art for “Star Wars: The Original Trilogy,” “Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy,” and “Star Wars: The Complete Saga” on Blu-ray Disc. The original plain packaging shown when pre-orders were announced back in January simply had the “Star Wars” logo floating on a solid color, and at time the time we expressed concern the designs were only temporary. Thankfully, new artwork has been released.
Both the ‘Original Trilogy’ and ‘Prequel Trilogy’ are similar collage designs, although they could have done away with the Emperor’s superimposed face under the chin of D. Vader in the ‘Original Trilogy’ cover. Take a closer look and you will see more superimposed images of Obi-Wan, Chewie, Princess Lea (in her Jabba-bikini of course), C-3PO & R2, and others. The collage work on both editions seems a bit overdone, but definitely an improvement.
The cover art for “Star Wars: The Complete Saga” is much more minimal. With Tatooine in the background, a young Anakin Skywalker is pictured with what looks like an older Luke Skywalker with his back turned. If we’re correct, the concept seems to say it all.
Both “Star Wars: The Original Trilogy” and “Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy” are available to pre-order for $39.99 each (from Amazon), reduced down from $69.99. “Star Wars: The Complete Saga,” containing all six Star Wars movies, is available to pre-order for $79.99 (originally priced at $139.99). All three editions will hit shelves in North America on September 16, 2011 (September 12 internationally).
