Disney says it will continue to produce Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo packs through 2010. The decision is based on research that says 77% of consumers plan to purchase a BD player in the near future.
Upcoming titles from Disney to be released as a combo package include “Hannah Montana The Movie,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure,” “UP” and “Santa Buddies.”
The first combo pack from Disney was “Sleeping Beauty” released in October 2008. The reasoning behind the move, according to Disney, was to allow consumers to “future proof” their movie collections.
The combo packs come in two variations. The first includes a Blu-ray Disc and DVD. The second includes a Blu-ray Disc, DVD and a digital copy of the movie.
Other Disney combo packs already available include “Race To Witch Mountain,” “Bedtime Stories,” “Bolt,” “Pinocchio” and “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.”

This is a great move from Disney and it appears that other studios are jumping on the Combo Pack bandwagon (17 Again, Coraline etc). I like the fact that you can have the DVD for a second room, a portable player or even give it to someone who does not yet have blu ray. I don’t mind paying a small premium for the convenience. But Disney should take a lesson from Coraline and include the DisneyFile Digital Copy on the DVD disc itself. That will reduce packaging and disc manufacturing costs and help the environment too. After all, the Digital Copy is useless once redeemed.
