The latest with Time Warner Cable

Time Warner Cable will reach 101 HD channels on Sunday, that according to News10Now out of Syracuse NY. The company says it has added 48 HD channels since January and will continue high definition channel conversions over the next few days.

“As of Sunday, our customers, waking up, turning on their high-def TV sets, have the potential to see as many as 101 channels in high-definition,” said Jeff Unaitis, Time Warner Public Affairs Vice President.

TMC dropped HDNet from its HD channel lineup, replacing the two channels (HDNet and HDNet Movies) in most areas with Smithsonian Channel HD and MavTV. (The OC Register reports Crime & Investigation HD instead of MavTV).

The OC Register is also reporting HDNet’s owner Mark Cuban was willing to negotiate lower fees for the distribution of the channels, and even wanted to offer HDNet as part of TMC’s basic digital package, with HDNet Movies offered on the special HD tier.

It’s interesting to note how the new channels from TMC cover two areas of regular HDNet programming — documentary (or special interest) and men’s focused programming. Smithsonian Channel HD and MavTV will cover both those areas.

Finally, confirmed yesterday in a statement Time Warner Cable is splitting with AOL. After nine years of what many analysts would regard as corporate blooper the two companies will split around the end of the year. AOL, who has about 6.3 million subscribers (some still paid), will navigate the web alone in search of a new angle to make them more relevant to today’s internet trends.

“We believe AOL will . . . have a better opportunity to achieve its full potential as a leading independent Internet company,” Jeffrey L. Bewkes, Time Warner chairman and chief executive

  1. I suggest that everyone drop Time Warner Cable over the HDNet and HD Movie Networks being dropped. There are alternate sources such as Direct TV, Dish Network, FIOS and ATT UVerse. Hit TWC where it hurts the most, on the bottom line.

  2. I WANT FOX NEWS IN HD. WHEN WILL THIS HAPPEN? YOUR COMPETITOR COX OFFERS THIS CHANNEL WHY DON’T YOU. THIS HAS TAKEN WAY TOO LONG TO PUT ON THE HD CABLE LINEUP.
