After the announcement yesterday that Sony shipped 1million Playstation 3 units (only meeting half of their expected number, however an impressive figure in the time given), Toshiba announced today that they are lowering the price of their new HD-A20 HD DVD player to $600.
Up until recently it was thought that their newest player would go for $999, the same as the Blu-ray Disc player. This has delt a serious blow to the Blu-ray side, as the only reason previously to spend more money on their player was because Blu-ray had 1080p.
This is just starting to get interesting! Will Sony be able to answer with a lower priced 1080p player? Or will they continue to push PS3 units out the warehouse to try and steal the market through gaming?
I’m not sure that strategy will work. I have a friend who bought a PS3 but won’t play Blu-ray discs on it because he doesn’t want it to overheat or get worn down. Maybe the (affordable) stand alone player is the answer?
