UltraViolet (UV) Movie Library Closing. Here’s What To Do.

ultraviolet-closing-july-31-2019There were many who predicted UV would eventually come to an end, but most of us hoped it would never happen.

Nevertheless, the UltraViolet (UV) digital movie library is going to shutdown on July 31, 2019. The closing date happens to be precisely six months after Sony Pictures Store closes its doors on Jan. 31, 2019.

The ironic thing is Sony directs customers who purchased or redeemed movies through their website to link their account to Vudu. The Walmart service has long been a partner with UltraViolet, and has already addressed the issue in a support topic.

In the post, Vudu warns customers not to “unlink” their UltraViolet accounts even after the shutdown. But, in the same post ensures “Movies and TV shows you purchased or redeemed at Vudu are not affected.”

What To Do?

UltraViolet tells customers to be sure you have your UV account linked to retailer services that currently include FandangoNow, Kaleidescape, Paramount, Verizon FiOS, and the aforementioned Vudu.

They also tell you, as mentioned above, not to unlink your UltraViolet account from any other services that you have connected. Here’s a tip. If you haven’t linked your UV account to other services you might consider doing it before the shutdown.

After the shutdown, your UV library will be closed and no longer accessible. In their words:

“Your UltraViolet Library will automatically close and, in the majority of cases, your movies and TV shows will remain accessible at previously-linked retailers.”

And, any future digital purchases or code redemptions will not be added to the UltraViolet library.

What you should start doing is making sure all your digital purchases get transferred to Movies Anywhere. The Disney service is likely going to be around for a while, or at least until the next solution arises.
