There are some Steelbooks at Best Buy that end up in the discount rack, and some that you just can’t get your hands on. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is one of those titles that quickly sold out on BestBuy.com and in stores, and is now selling for upwards of $50 on secondary markets like eBay.
For example, as of this posting a 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbook copy of GOTG V2 just sold for $53 plus shipping. Others are set to Buy It Now for $58. But the edition is only list-priced $34.99 at Best Buy.
The regular Blu-ray edition of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is selling for close to $40 on eBay. At Best Buy the version is priced at $24.99 (Reg. $29.99), but we couldn’t find a copy within 250 miles of our office.
This was also true of other limited edition Steelbooks from Best Buy such as Logan and last week’s release of Alien: Covenant to 4k Blu-ray. Although, copies of Jason Bourne, Resident Evil: Vendetta, and The Fifth Element in metal packaging are still readily available.
Steelbooks have become a desirable alternative to the common editions of movies and TV shows on disc. The limited editions may not even feature any exclusive content, but the custom artwork and heavier-duty packaging make them must-haves for collectors and fans alike.
Of course there are those that are just looking to make a buck. One seller on eBay somehow got ahold of 80 copies of the Best Buy Steelbook edition of GOTG V2 on 4k Blu-ray, selling them for $53 each. That’s a profit of at least $1,400 if the seller paid the list price of $34.99.
Is there a title coming up that you really want to have in Steelbook packaging? Our advise is to pre-order them earlier and have them shipped rather than picked up. We were only a few hours late picking up Alien: Covenant 4k Steelbook from a local store when it had already been sold.
One of the reasons the GOTG Vol 2 Steelbook is so hard to find is because this was the only way to get this title in 3D.
