HBO has released Steelbook editions of the first and second seasons of Game of Thrones, each edition selling for $39.99 from most retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart. The new 5-disc editions don’t offer much more than the original Blu-ray releases in terms of content, but do come with stylish, albeit awkward, new packaging designed by Elastic (the crew that made the intro to the TV show), along with different collectible sigils (3D emblems) for each Blu-ray edition.
What may be tempting for those who already own the Blu-ray editions (or those who have watched the episodes way too many times), is that the new Blu-ray Steelbook editions come with audio formatted in Dolby Atmos. You’ll need a speaker system that supports the more immersive, three-dimensional format, but the audio (previously only available in 5.1 channels), will surely bring new life to the episodes. For those who don’t own a Dolby Atmos speaker yet, the audio will still play in older Dolby formats.
For bonus content, both Blu-ray Steelbook editions of Game of Thrones Season 1 and Season 2 contain the same extras previously released such as in-episode guides, commentaries, character profiles, and other content provided both on the Blu-ray and DVD editions. And, codes to redeem Digital HD copies are provided for both Apple iTunes and UltraViolet.
