Sony’s PlayStation TV never really took off, at least to the extent of Apple TV or Roku media players. But quite a few people grabbed the devices when Sony Store Online dropped the prices dramatically yesterday. The standalone PlayStation TV (PSTV3000413) was only $19.99 (List: $99.99), while the PlayStation TV Dualshock 3 Bundle (PSTV3000468) was just $39.99 (List: $139.99).
Even though the Sony Store Online no longer offers the media players, there are still a few left over at Amazon, and likely at local electronics stores and GameStop (although not at the low prices mentioned above). The discounts on PlayStation TV were came at the same time as the closing of Sony’s online store (more on that here).
PlayStation TV launched about a year ago to compete with other media players, namely the Amazon Fire TV, offering both a streaming video and game service, with titles to rent or purchase through PlayStation Vue. The platform has a pretty good lineup of channels, and playable games include select PS Vita games, Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) and classic games from PSone and PSP systems.
To play games on PlayStation TV users need a Dualshock 3 or Dualshock 4 controller, and a Sony memory card to save game progress.
We’re not sure where the PlayStation TV is headed, but if anyone wants to chime in please do in the comments!
