Here’s some news that may influence the way we pay for channels through traditional TV service providers. Coming this July you’ll be able to order channels à la carte on Sony’s PlayStation Vue service. What’s more, PS Plus subscribers will be able to get discounts on programming packages (although not specified), that may make it beneficial to plunk down the $49.99 per year for membership.
PlayStation Vue offers channels such as CBS, Discovery Channel, Fox, and NBC in their “core” channel package that costs $49.99 per month. However, the à la carte channels choices will only launch with Fox Soccer Channel, Machinima, and Showtime (at least for now). Those channels will cost $14.99, $3.99, and $10.99 per month, respectively.
The Sony service has also been expanded. When PlayStation Vue was launched back in March it was only available in a few cities. but the E3 announcement today also brought news that PS Vue will launch for PS3 and PS4 in Los Angeles and San Francisco this evening.
In those cities, PlayStation Vue will offer up to 85 channels per market through the Access, Core, or Elite subscription packages.
Sony also announced the software-based Media Player for PlayStation 4, downloadable starting tonight in the PS4 content area.
Here’s a list of PlayStation Vue channels currently available.
