Amazon Prime gains 10 million new members during holiday

Amazon_Fire_TV_StickAmazon issued a press release today boasting 10 million new customers signed up for the Prime membership during this holiday season. The service offers free two-day shipping on most items, unlimited video and music streaming, and access to the Kindle Owners Lending Library for $99 per year.

Sales of Amazon’s Fire TV streaming media player and Fire TV Stick have no doubt added to the number of sign-ups. Amazon has been advertising the regularly-priced $99 player for $79 throughout most of the holiday. The Fire TV Stick (shipping again in January, 2015), sells for $39 per unit.

Amazon also reported close to 60 percent of Amazon.com customers shopped using a mobile device during this holiday season, with sales from the Amazon smartphone app doubling this year from last in the US.

Amazon recently launched the “Prime Now” service in Manhattan that delivers products within one hour to Prime members. “We are working hard to make Prime even better and expanding the recently launched Prime Now to additional cities in 2015,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
