SOAPnet channel cancelled on ABC

Disney has cancelled ABC’s SOAPnet channel after 14 years of broadcasting shows such as “Days of Our Lives,” “General Hospital,” and “The Young and the Restless.” Last November, Disney made the official announcement the channel would no longer be on air as of the first of this year, although talks of dropping the channel have been on for a few years now as the network was poised to make room for more kids programming — namely the Disney Junior channel. SOAPnet aired current and past episodes of soap operas and TV dramas, with a large fan base of working viewers who were able to watch daytime soaps at night. As of August 2013, the channel was available in almost 60% of households with TV service.

“SOAPnet had a great run. It served an audience of super-soap fans,” said Ben Pyne, president of global distribution for Disney Media Networks, back in November.

As of today, ABC only produces one soap opera, “General Hospital,” after a history of producing long-running shows such as “All My Children,” “One Life to Live,” and “Ryan’s Hope.”

Disney Junior, meanwhile, officially launched as a TV channel in March, 2012 and is available on DirecTV, AT&T U-verse, Verizon FiOS, and most cable TV providers.

  1. Disney is BS. Bring back Soapnet. Listen to the folks that support Soapnet!!! How many children’s channels do you need to have on. Give us older folks something we like. I work during the day and sometimes am unable to DVR my soap (Days ofOur Lives) and was so glad I was able to have somewhere I could go to watch it, plus the older shows like 90210. Listen to the fans and bring it back!!!

  2. Money, money, and more money!!! So much greed these days. Even a once fan friendly company like Disney isn’t above the green monster.

  3. Seriously.!!!!! Uggggghhhhh . This is where I would catch up with General Hospital since I work when it’s on during the day. Disney is fine since I have a daughter, but seriously I’m not happy. There’s over a gazillion channels they could’ve taken out. Do we really need hundreds of music and sports channels. This SUCKS!!!!!!

    • I definitely want soap net back what are you thinking yet another damn channel with what more cartoons come on how many does that make it??? Just because you made the poor decision to cancel one life to live does mean you have to ad insult to injury and continue down the same horrible road.

  4. What a shame! Disney has absolutely NO idea what they’ve done! Soapnet not only recapped all the soaps, but other wonderful shows, as well! They’ll surely be missed! WAKE UP DISNEY PEOPLE AND GET SOAPNET BACK ON THE AIR!!!!

  5. As I said before, Disney executives have no respect for their viewers……thet will continue to fail unless they realize their mistakes…Goodbye, Disney…”YOU” won’t be missed…….
