Just in time to mark the 25th anniversary of the show’s premiere in 1987, Paramount will release Star Trek: The Next Generation: The First Season to Blu-ray Disc on July 24, 2012. The newly restored high-definition transfer marks the first time TNG has been available in high-definition (although Paramount released a teaser disc last year which included a pilot and two favorite episodes). The Blu-ray discs will, of course, be formatted in 1080p but audiophiles will be excited about the disc’s 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. (If you’re still stuck in 5.1 land, this might be a time to upgrade.) The ‘Next Generation’ box set containing six discs is loaded with extras, commentaries, special features and deleted scenes all adding up to 1,184 minutes of pure TNG. Paramount had planned to release the sequential seven seasons of TNG throughout 2012, but at this point that would mean one or more seasons released every month. Nevertheless we’ll be happy with whatever is slated. Pre-order Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season One on Blu-ray Disc for $78.86 (List: $129.99).
