Starting today (Halloween of all days!), Redbox has increased the price of its daily DVD rentals to $1.20. So much for dollar rentals. Redbox blames increased operating expenses and banking debit card fees for the price hike. The good news is though Blu-ray Discs and video games and will stay the same price at $1.50 and $2 per day, respectively. Redbox is also trying to soften the blow by discounting the first day of DVD rentals to $1.00 through November 30, if you reserve online. Redbox says this is the first time they have raised prices in eight years.

They’re getting more and more expensive aren’t they? Since I’ve had the Blockbuster Movie Pass, a little over a month now, I haven’t used Redbox once. Not only that but I cancelled my Netflix and Gamefly accounts too. It’s replaced all those services by giving me unlimited by-mail rentals of DVD’s, Blu-rays and video games, with the option of in-store exchanges (very handy), instant streaming, and 20 movie channels. All that for $10 a month that is conveniently added to my DISH Network bill. Plus Blockbuster gets many of its movies 28 days earlier than Redbox. One of my coworkers at DISH who sets up new accounts was also telling me that new customers can get the Blockbuster Movie Pass free for 12 months too. Hard to beat that, especially when everyone else is raising their prices.
