If you’ve seen a heavyweight title fight, you know the challenger always arrives first. Today, that challenger is Battlefield 3 ($59.99), EA and Dice’s hotly anticipated first-person shooter for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Battlefield 3 promises intense, 21st century warfare throughout its globe-trotting single player and co-op campaigns, but it’s the multiplayer portion that’s vying to unseat the champion franchise.
PC players will get the thrill of 64-player matches, while console crusaders will be going 12 on 12 in contests that are expected to be more about teamwork and strategy than itchy trigger fingers. Map wise, you’ll be getting 9 on the disc, with more maps available for purchase later through downloadable content. Expectations for the game may have been dulled this month with the release of a multiplayer beta that was met with some criticism for its bugs and lackluster gameplay.
Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 hits store shelves in two weeks, and at least one analyst is predicting a TKO by the champ.
