[HTML1]We took a quick poll here and found several titles in common for 2009. But a short list was not without disagreements. Among four of us there were only a few titles that were common ground and most of them, no surprise, fall under the action/adventure genre.
Some personal favorites (which didn’t find common ground) include Venture Bros.: Season Three, Kagemusha – Criterion Collection, and Braveheart (Sapphire Edition). And, while Star Trek (2009) was a common favorite, a couple of the re-released motion pictures also popped up as best Blu-ray releases.
Gladiator (Sapphire Edition) was among the “absolute worst” titles for ’09, citing overly filtered video, edge enhancement, and inconsistencies in mastering. However, the 5.1 DTS-HD soundtrack gets rave reviews, which may reverse your decision to buy it.
Here’s our Top Five (in no particular order):
- Star Trek
- Fight Club
- Watchmen
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
- Coraline
Five other titles (with at least two votes):
- Terminator Salvation (Director’s Cut)
- Wall•E
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
- Up
- Quantum of Solace
Upcoming and promising titles this month which may have made the list but haven’t been viewed yet include Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Dec. 8), Public Enemies (Dec. 8), Lost: The Complete Fifth Season (Dec.8), Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 3 (Dec. 15) and District 9 (Dec. 22).
It’s too bad we can’t include Lord of the Rings in the roundup this year. While pre-orders are being taken for the much anticipated trilogy, rumored release dates have us waiting until around Feb/March ’10.

not sure about up and wall e. its pretty easy to make animations look good in HD. upscaling DVDs for animated films looks almost as good as Bluray if you ask me.
