MTV has announced it will launch its first HD channel outside the United States this month. The high-definition channel, named MTVNHD (MTV Networks High Definition), will launch Sept. 15, and will first be available in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland and Sweden.
MTV also plans to launch additional HD channels in Europe and Latin America by the end of 2008. Those additional countries include France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the UK, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela.
With a production studio in Warsaw and a future studio expected for Buenos Aires, MTV will be able to cut costs by producing content to run across several territories. The MTVNHD international channel will start by offering its programs only in English, and will broadcast in 1080i HD with Dolby 5.1 surround.
