Sony cuts the cost of it’s first Blu-ray Disc player by $200. The BDP-S1, originally priced at $999, offers the highest image quality possible with it’s 1080p native format. You can now get this player for $799.
Sony, in an attempt to compete with rival hi def format HD DVD, has been cutting the costs of many of it’s Blu-ray Disc products. Their latest product, the BDP-S300, is a 1080p Blu-ray Disc player which is scheduled to release this month to compete with $400-$500 range HD DVD players.
The BDP-S300 will play a vital role in the format race. Sony’s Playstation 3, which has a built-in Blu-ray Disc player, might have been the wild card which could have turned the race in Sony’s favor. Unfortunately, the $599 PS3 was too pricey for many consumers. The $200 mark down on the BDP-S1, at $799 is still out of range for the mass consumer market.
