There may be nothing better than a good submarine movie, especially on the big screen. You can go back as early as the 40’s but in terms of special effects Wolfgang Petersen’s Das Boot (1981) set a standard that has been followed by other great films like The Abyss (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), and Crimson Tide (1995).
Now there’s Hunter Killer, a film about a missing US submarine, a mission to rescue a kidnapped Russian president, and the threat of WWIII stemming from a Russian coup. Based on the novel Firing Point by Don Keith and George Wallace, Hunter Killer has a great cast that includes Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen), Oscar-winner Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), and Oscar-winning musician Common (Marshall).
Check out this short clip from the movie as Captain Joe Glass (played by Gerard Butler) steers his submarine away from incoming torpedoes. It’s not really a Halloween film, but Hunter Killer opens on Friday, Oct. 26 to theaters across the US from Summit Entertainment .
