New Blu-ray Disc Releases On Tuesday, July 4th

new-blu-ray-july-4-2017-900x600It looks like most studios avoided releasing their blockbusters on July 4th, as there’s a limited number of new Blu-ray titles hitting shelves this Tuesday. There are several releases, however, that are worth considering. Here’s a breakdown of our suggestions for the week followed by an extended list. Sadly, only one Ultra HD Blu-ray release this week.

The Zookeeper’s Wife (2017) is a historical drama starring Oscar-nominated actress Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, The Help) that tells the tale of the Warsaw Zoo where Antonina and Jan Zabinski helped save hundreds of animals and people during the German invasion. The film gets a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, and is our Top Pick for the week.

Robert De Niro stars as the fictional aging comedian Jackie Burke in The Comedian from Sony Pictures. The film is chock-full of acclaimed actors including Harvey Keitel, Edie Falco, Danny DeVito, and Charles Grodin to name a few. The movie doesn’t rank high on Rotten Tomatoes (only 25% on the Tomatometer), but if you want to see an all-star cast try to make something of a lacking story line this is the film for you.

A Shock To The System (1990) is somewhat of a classic comedy/thriller starring Michael Caine, Elizabeth McGovern and Peter Riegert about corporate politics and the extremes one may go to climb the corporate ladder. One might note the cover art for the Blu-ray packaging features Michael Cane standing in front of the back drop of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers.

And, Song to Song from 3-time Oscar-nominated director Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life, The Thin Red Line) is now available on disc. It’s the only 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray release this week, a drama that explores love triangles in Austin Texas with a great cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, Holly Hunter, Val Kilmer, Bérénice Marlohe, and Holly Hunter.

Those are our top suggestions for the week. Now, here’s an extended list.
