New 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray Releases Include Ghostbusters & Independence Day

This week’s movie releases include several films on Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, a new disc format that provides 4-times the resolution of conventional Blu-ray Discs. To play the 4k Ultra HD Blu-ray discs you’ll need an Ultra HD Blu-ray player, but even if you don’t have one yet the following editions also include conventional Blu-ray discs.

Ghostbusters

2-time Oscar-nominated science fiction film Ghostbusters (1984) has been released to Ultra HD Blu-ray with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack compatible with Dolby TrueHD 7.1. Ghostbusters stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, and Sigourney Weaver. The UHD BD edition of Ghostbusters sells for $29.99 on Amazon like other Ultra HD Blu-ray titles, but unfortunately does not appear to include a digital copy.

5 years after the theatrical release of Ghostbusters Columbia Pictures released Ghostbusters II starring most of the main cast of Ghostbusters including Bill Murray (Dr. Peter Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Dr. Raymond Stantz), Harold Ramis (Dr. Egon Spengler), Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore), and Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett). Audio is formatted with the same options as Ghostbusters (Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD 7.1), and video provided in 4k at 2160p resolution. Ghostbusters II on Ultra HD Blu-ray sells for $29.99.

Independence Day

Independence Day (1996) is now available in 4k on Ultra HD Blu-ray. The 2-hour and 25-minute film was directed by Roland Emmerich and stars Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, and Mary McDonnell. The 3-disc edition from 20th Century Fox includes one Ultra HD Blu-ray and two Blu-ray discs, as well as a Digital HD copy. Currently selling for $29.99 on Amazon.

IMAX: Journey To Space

Shout! Factory has released IMAX: Journey To Space to Ultra HD Blu-ray. The 3-disc edition from Shout! Factory includes 4k UHD BD, Blu-ray 3D, and Blu-ray copies in one package, and is selling for $29.99. The film is narrated by Patrick Stewart (Star Trek) and directed by Mark Krenzien (Journey to the South Pacific )

More Titles

Warner Home Video was also scheduling to release Creed, In the Heart of the Sea and Point Break on Ultra HD Blu-ray. While the titles have a release date of June 7th, we were unable to find on Amazon although Best Buy has them available to order online (albeit missing product images).

20th Century Fox has The Martian: Extended Edition releasing on June 7th to Ultra HD Blu-ray. Best Buy has the title available on their website, although Amazon is not showing it,
