DirecTV has just launched three 4k channels for customers with Ultra HD TVs. One of the channels premieres just in time to deliver The Masters golf tournament that starts today, April 7th and runs through April 10th. The event channel offers both free and pay-per-view live programming such as The Masters coverage in 4k — a first for pay-TV provider.
The other two DirecTV 4k channels are full-time with original content, documentaries, PPV movies, full-length features, and short-form content.
Here’s a breakdown of the three 4k channels:
- Channel 104: a full-time channel with mix of 4K fare, including nature documentaries and original content from the DirecTV/AT&T Audience Network.
- Channel 105: a full-time pay-per-view movie channel with full-length features and short-form documentaries.
- Channel 106: An event channel with free 4K live events, including this week’s Master’s coverage, as well as pay-per-view events.
DirecTV/AT&T customers will need to subscribe to 4k service in order to view the channels, and must have the Genie HD DVR (Model HR54) installed professionally. In addition, customers need a manufacturer-certified DirecTV 4k Ready TV, else they’ll need a 4k Genie Mini (Model C61k) installed.
Finally, DirecTV customers must be subscribed to the Ultimate or Premier TV packages in order to watch 4k content.
Movies available in 4k On Demand include feature films such as World War Z, Hugo, Noah, Spider-Man 3, and The Other Guys.
