Sony announces first Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs for 2016

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the first titles to be released on Ultra HD Blu-ray, the nex-gen disc format specified by the Blu-ray Disc Association last May for display on 4k Ultra HD TVs. The first batch of movies include:

  • Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Salt
  • Hancock
  • Chappie
  • Pineapple Express
  • The Smurfs 2

Other titles Sony mentioned as being worked on for release to Ultra HD Blu-ray include Captain Philips, Fury, and remastered older films such as Ghostbusters and The Fifth Element.

Update: The Sony films listed above will also feature Dolby Atmos audio, the next-generation audio format from Dolby Laboratories.
