Peter Jackson talks The Hobbit 3D shot with RED EPIC cameras

Here’s a production video from The Hobbit in which Peter Jackson talks about shooting the film in 3D with the RED EPIC camera. Because the lenses are so large, one camera actually shoots a mirror image to achieve the 1″ space between angles which simulates human vision.

These are no amateur cameras. The Hobbit is being shot in 5k resolution – a resolution even higher than the 4K resolution which could be next evolution in high-definition. To compare, 4K is about four-times the resolution as Blu-ray Disc’s 1080p.

In the video diary Jackson shows off the The Hobbit camera collection composed of 48 RED EPIC cameras, some mounted, some shelved, all with unique names.

Production designers explain how the RED camera tends to desaturate some color and so the sets are painted with even more vibrance than would normally be needed. They also talk about the complexities of shooting at 48 frames-per-second.

You can get a look at one of the production artworks in 3D if you put on some old school red & blue glasses. Cool stuff.

The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey in 3D is scheduled for release for the holiday season 2012.

  1. I’m gonna love it on my 3D tv, whether anyone else will or not. :) I’m just glad to hear there are movies being *shot* in the 3D again instead of shot in 2D and faked in later.

  2. this movie looks great but i dont know why they need to do it in 3d. by the time the movie comes out people are going to be sick of 3d and just going to 2d theaters. also, no one will have 3d tvs and so a 3D Blu-ray Disc is just a waste of time. i certainly didn’t need to see LOTR in 3d because they were so well done. anyway looking forward to this two part movie which i hope they release within the same year!
