Blu-ray Picks of the Week for May 31st

With the long weekend, and an even longer list of Blu-ray releases over the past few says, including this Tuesday’s traditional street date, here’s a short rundown as we get over our Memorial Day Hangover here at HD Report (and no, we didn’t see the cash grab sequel this weekend)…  We didn’t get a chance to write out each of these (pure weekend laziness compounded by booze n’ BBQs), so this is simply a rundown of recommendations.  Note that, no matter how much we love the following films, it’s the BD quality we’re always letting you know about.  If it’s not recommended or has a light recommendation, it doesn’t mean we hated the movie itself.  That said…

This week the word on the street is giving high recommendations to the following Blu-ray releases:

  • American Graffiti: Special Edition (Universal)
  • Barry Lyndon (Warner Brothers)
  • Biutiful (Lionsgate)
  • The Cat O’ Nine Tails (Blue Underground)
  • Drive Angry (Summit)
  • Lolita [1962] (Warner Brothers)
  • Legend: Ultimate Edition (Universal)
  • Once Upon a Time in the West (Paramount)
  • Stanley Kubrick Limited Edition Collection (Warner Brothers)
  • True Blood: The Complete Third Season (HBO)

You might consider purchasing any of the aforementioned discs simply because the BD is far superior in most cases to the prior DVD versions in both video and audio quality.

Also recommended (for purchase or, better yet, rental on Blu-ray):

  • A Clockwork Orange: 40th Anniversary Edition (Warner Brothers)
  • Drive Angry – 3D (Summit)
  • Rookie Blue: The Complete First Season (E1)
  • Passion Play (Image)

Recommended for rental on Blu-ray:

  • Get Shorty (MGM/UA)
  • Maverick (Warner)
  • Midnight Cowboy  (MGM/UA)
  • The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (MGM/UA)
  • Wild Wild West (Warner Brothers)
  • Big Jake (Paramount)
  • David Byrne: Ride Rise Roar (Eagle Rock)
  • A Man Called Horse (Paramount)
  • Primal Scream: Screamadelica Live (Eagle Rock)
  • Rio Lobo (Paramount)
  • Yu Yu Hakusho: Season 1 (FUNimation)

Here’s a link all Blu-ray Disc releases for the week of May 31st, 2011.
