Blu-ray Review: Super 8

The powerful presence of Spielberg hangs over every frame of "Super 8." J.J. Abrams makes the film an outright, full-blown homage to The Beard's career, leaving Super 8 standing as only a shrine to Spielberg’s talents rather than Abrams’ own.

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for June 14th

This week offers up many titles, but few worth owning... However, if you’re a fan of Japanese cinema (no, no the shock type, but a more poetical picture) Criterion has a little something for you... and they’re also releasing an underrated Nicolas Roeg headtrip for your viewing pleasure. For those with more mainstream tastes there’s a slew of recent theatrical films on Blu-ray, and Warner’s catches fans up with Harry Potter with more HD Ultimate Editions of the successful franchise.

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for June 7th

This Tuesday offers a huge amount of Blu-ray releases... but it’s a mixed bag to be sure. What should you consider for your HD library and viewing pleasure? Here’s what we recommend for this Tuesday, June 7th:

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for May 31st

This week the word on the street is giving high recommendations to the following Blu-ray releases:

Blu-ray Review: The Firm

This Sunday on Blu-ray, Paramount releases The Firm (1993) starring Tom Cruise... but is it worth buying or are we being asked to purchase something that, sooner or later, probably soon, will end up a lot cheaper after being dumped into a bargain bin? Let’s find out...

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for May 24th

This week on Blu-ray Warner Bros is offering up some goodies worth of the format ("Papillon", "Grand Prix"). Criterion also puts two older titles on Blu-ray ("The Great Dictator", "Solaris"), and that’s always worth a mention for the loving care they give their releases; however, if you own the already awesome DVDs, you need to consider the extra spend for what amounts to minor improvements at best.

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for May 17th

This week in Blu-ray brings us some Justin Bieber, a few Criterion releases as well as a solid classic from Fox. The rest of the bunch... well, it depends on what your interests are and if what you consider a value in Blu-ray titles that may or may not have a terrific transfer behind them (most don’t... so, caveat emptor).

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for May 10th

This week on Blu-ray we've got the Alien set, now available as stand-alone Blu-ray discs, and a load of Digibook releases on BD that are definitely worth a purchase for your HD library. Also recommended are some Digibook releases, including Patton and Master and Commander. Other blu-ray discs to hit the shelves are Blue Valentine, one of the best films of 2010, and a Criterion release of a very fun Jonathan Demme movie, Something Wild, that may be worth a rental or even a buy. For Marilyn Monroe fans, a few classic films come your way and offer BD-quality transfers of old faves.

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for July 13th

This week there's not a heck of a lot to recommend as must-own Blu-ray discs, though for dramedy you may wanna check out Ben Stiller in "Greenberg" as well as the newest Atom Egoyan film for rental. The standouts are "In Bruges" and Christopher Nolan's "Insomnia" remake.

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for July 6th

Warner Bros. has released some great BD's lately, but these double-feature releases seem destined for the cut-out bin at your local big-box discount store. Let's take a gander at three decent picks for the week:

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for June 29th

This week is long on releases... check 'em out below. A few are recommended (The Crazies, The Leopard, The White Ribbon), and one is partially recommended (Predator), but the rest are a mixed bag, though the concert films should be outstanding on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray Picks of The Week for June 22nd

We're focusing on Green Zone this week here at HD Report, but there are of course other releases for June 22nd. Suffice to say, you can never go wrong with Criterion, though sometimes other distributors give their releases just as much love...

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for June 15th.

This week looks like a dump of lesser titles, tv/cable series offerings and some B-grade genre grinds, but there is one must-own title, for indie-fans (or fans of what was once called Independent Cinema) and one truly spectacular little gem of a horror film. There’s also a real stinker from the 80’s that somehow still has legs as trash cinema cult fave.

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for June 8th

This week's a little light on Blu-ray releases of any note save for Scorsese's recent foray into gothic psychological terror and an old comedy fave from the 80's

Blu-ray Picks of the Week for June 1st

So, Disney decided to remake a classic... and sure it's their own property (essentially), but did we really need a CGIcandy-colored update of Lewis Carroll's classic tale of a girl on a wild trip through the looking glass? And is it any better than the their own animated film from 1951?

Blu-ray Picks for the Week of May 25th

This week's picks offers one absolutely must-have disc for your hi-def library, three if you're a really keen cineaste with a yen for the experimental and if you don't mind a little digital dusting (aka DNR) marring an otherwise classic epic. The rest of the bunch are a mixed batch of titles you're probably better off renting.

Blu-ray Picks Of The Week for May 18th

Slim prospects for good Blu-ray releases this week, with only a few standouts amongst the bunch. Criterion is here, of course, but there’s nothing that could be called a must-own title for HD… though your opinion may vary especially if you like fine acting (and schlock) in high-def.

Blu-ray Picks Of The Week for May 11th

Lots o’ cool stuff gets released on Blu-ray this week (5/11/10). It’s a good week for fans of Mel Brooks and Mr. Miyagi, and Criterion releases one absolutely must-have classic for your HD library… Let’s take a look:

Blu-ray Picks Of The Week for May 4th

This week there are plenty more Blu-ray offerings but not much worth purchasing (or in some cases renting, unless you really need your Michael Bolton fix).

Blu-ray Picks Of The Week for April 20th.

A big week for Blu-ray, though Tuesday’s street date’s offerings are clearly overshadowed by Earth Day’s big Blu-ray event: the release of Avatar. This week catch Basketball Diaries, Crazy Heart, The Lovely Bones and Minority Report.
