2010 FIFA World Cup in 3D to release on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced it will release The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Film in 3D on Blu-ray Disc Nov. 16. This year’s World Cup was the first to be filmed in 3D, and will contain 64-minutes of highlights from the event held in South Africa.

The 3D coverage started with the opening match between South Africa and Mexico. Overall, 25 matches were produced by Sony and FIFA in 3D – coverage they announced back in Dec. 2009.

In the US, ESPN was the first to launch a 3D network starting with the 2010 World Cup from South Africa on ESPN 3D. (ESPN and ABC also aired the matches in high definition 2D.)

Starting on Dec. 17. ESPN will broadcast the first NBA games beginning with the Miami Heat vs. the New York Knicks.
