This week on Blu-ray Disc

ran-kurosawa-blu-ray-sqSet in 16th century Japan Akira Kurosawa’s Ran, loosely based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, tells the story of Lord Hidetora who while dividing his land among his three sons ends up banishing one of them. Extras include audio commentary, A.K., a 74-minute film about Kurosawa by director Chris Marker (La Jetée), a 30-minute making of documentary, interviews and booklet. This film is in Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 with English subtitles, 1080p video at 1.85:1 aspect ratio.

Law Abiding Citizen was released last fall in theaters and did about $73 million US (budget $53 mil.). The film stars Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler in a crime drama about a man who seeks justice ten years after his family is murdered and one of the killers is released. Blu-ray Disc is formatted at 2.40:1 aspect ratio, 1080p MPEG-4 video and Dolby TrueHD 5.1. This is a two-disc set.

This week we also find the return of the classic Scorsese film Goodfellas, out this week as a 20th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray Disc. The film was one of the first Blu-ray releases way back in ’07, and audio master was hopefully going to be improved for this special release. But according to early reviews the audio and video are the same as the original. The extras disc contains the same documentaries and audio commentaries that were released back in ’04 on DVD. However, with this release you’ll get a two-disc DigiBook which includes a 32-pages of photos and writings.
